Detailed Itinerary

DAY
1

Fly into Leh via one of the most picturesque flights over the high Himalayas. Acclimatize yourself to the high altitude town of Leh, located at 3500m above sea level.

A day of sightseeing is on the cards. Visit the Shey Palace, the erstwhile residence of the royal family of Ladakh. Continue onto the Thiksey monastery complex, very reminiscent of the Potala in its structure. In the afternoon, you may want to explore the bustling bylanes of the local market, where ladies in traditional attire still sell homegrown organic vegetables.

Drive from Leh towards Sham valley, visiting the Alchi and Likir monasteries on the way. Reach Lamayuru, also known as 'moonland', and stay at a hotel for the night.

Visit the Lamayuru monastery perched on a craggy mountain, and start your trek with a short hike to Wanla (3250m), which involves crossing the PrinkitiLa (3700m), the first pass of the trip. Relax and get your bearings at the camp.

Today's trek takes you over a bridge at yapola, and through a narrow gorge, which finally opens up to the valley of Hanupatta (3970m).

We walk along a stream for the most part, then climb upwards to Sirsir La (4850m) . Once we descend from the pass, a stream directs us again to the camp at Photoksar (4050m).

We cross the village of Photoksar, as well as some stone shelters used by the villagers to keep their livestock. We camp at the base of Singay La (4300m).

We cross three passes today, first climbing up to the Singay la pass (5050m), then Kyukpa La (4430m), and finally the Margo La (4500m), to reach our campsite at Lingshed (3950m). You can explore the monastery above the village may want to explore the monastery above the village in the evening.

We trek to Snertse (3800m) today, crossing the Hanuma La (4800m). The ascent is gradual and you get a birds eye view of the Lingshed valley from the top.

We cross the stream and walk upwards towards the left- a steep ascent takes you to the Parfi La (3950m). Descend to the Zanskar river, and walk along it till we reach Hanumar (3450m), a village that consists of two houses. We camp here for the night.

A shorter day today, we mainly walk along the Zanskar river, cross the village of Pidmo, to make camp at Pishu.

Walk along the Zanskar river towards Karsha, passing the Rinam village. We camp below the Karsha monastery, the largest monastery in the Zanskar region, and definitely worth a visit.

A break from the camp life of the last few days, we trek to Padum (3610m), the capital of the Zanskar region. Check into a hotel for a hot shower, and spend the evening at leisure.

A day totally at leisure, free to visit the neighboring monasteries of Sani and Stakrimo.

After a day's rest, trek to Raru (3800m), walking upstream the Lungnak river, passing the Bardan monastery.

Trek along the river, crisscrossing to reach your camp at Pepula (3750m).

Walk upstream of the river, crossing it at Tangtse, and walk north towards Purne (3775m). Make camp for the night.

With the base at Purne, a day trek to Phugtal monastery is on the cards today. Phugtal monastery is one of the only monasteries that still needs to be visited on foot, having no road connection. The journey is well worth the effort, as we reach the monastery built into a cliffside. Return back to Purne by evening.

We trek to Skying today, crossing a bridge and waking southward mostly.

Trek from Skying to Lakhang (4450m), following roughly the same topography as the previous day.

We start an ascent today towards Shinkunla (5090m), crossing the pass and descending to the village of Chumik Nakpo, post which we camp for the night at Ramjak (4300m).

Trek from Ramjak to Palhamo (3700m), crossing the stream to reach your camp site.
Trek time - 5/6 hrs

DAY
23

Your last day on the trek, walk past the villages of Chika and Rarik, until the roadhead where your vehicle will pick you up and drop you to the hotel at Darcha Sumdo.
